The Devil just needed someone both desperate and determined enough to go the full distance required to see his own chaotic goals met. It could have easily been Father going to Purgatory in search of Mother, if Warren had not been in the picture. That role is essentially a profound loss that justifies in Warren mind, his decision to go to Purgatory. It's possible that Father could have fulfilled the role that Florence provides had she just been killed by raiders along with her parents. Either way, Warren now had an attachment to another person who could potentially go to Purgatory, which is convenient with Father leaving the picture. It's possible that Warren was somehow steered towards Florence vie the Devils manipulation of events, or that Florence family are just another in a long list of casualties since The Masked Man released the Devil. Let's talk about Florence, I believe she and her family are just ordinary farmers who happened to succumb to life in a cruel environment under the Devils influence. I believe something to this effect was hinted at by the narrator in the last fight between the two posses, though it is also possible the narrator is simply referring to how the Devil has been steering things the whole time.
It's possible that the narrator, or Death, had something to do with Fathers newfound resolve when he adopts the role as The Undertaker, or possibly his revelation after his failed suicide. I suspect possibly Father was supposed to die due to the harshness of the situation, or atleast upon leaving, lack the resolve to oppose the Devils plan via stopping Warren. I find Father's departure to be particularly interesting as I believe it wasn't necessarily part of the plan.
The destitution of the area, likely caused by the Devils influence on local leaders like The Mexican gangster, and The Masked Man, drove Father to purchase the would be Bad Luck amulet from the Stranger, which lead to the eventual downfall and Fathers exitus from group.

Cervantes, under Bathym Raum, had established a satanic cult, with members willing to butcher an innocent woman (your Mother), thus ending the crack shot but otherwise normal father and son duos' journey on the Oregon Trail.

What this all means is that the Devil has been invested in this plot for likely at the very least around one decade, though likely much longer due to the nature of the series of events that set Father and Warren on their path. On top of this, the masked man has built himself a vast criminal network, essentially he has the time to firmly established himself. Also by the time Warren encounters him, warren has enough time to grown into a man, (granted it is impossible to say how old warren was at the time of the prequel mission, I believe it says he was 12 at the time of the tutorial mission). I honestly don't recall any dates being given so there isn't really a good way to tell how much time has passed in between scenarios, however we do know that towards the end of that scenario, The Masked Man is created. The plan which for all we know has been in the works since at least the time when Cervantes tells Vasquez to "Follow the Red Star" in the beginning of prequel mission. I just completed all the scenarios in the main story, so I can only say as much as the next person with the same degree of certainty, but I'll tell you my take on the situation anyway.įrom what I understood there isn't anything particularly special about Warren himself, except that he just happens to be an unwitting pawn of The Stranger's (The Devil, The AC, etc) master plan against purgatory.
